Ingredients
1 lb Great Northern beans
1 medium head cabbage
2-3 carrots
1-2 onions
1 bone and attached scraps from sprial cut ham
6 whole cloves (more to taste)
12 bay leaves
salt to taste
8-12 cups water
Preparation
- Soak beans in water overnight; rinse and pick out any bad beans.
- Bring water to boil in large pot. Add ham bone, beans, cloves, and bay leaves. Cook at low boil for one hour
- Shred cabbage and carrots and saute in olive oil or butter. Cut onions into large chunks. Add all veggies to pot and cook at low boil for 2 hours.
- Add salt to taste; enjoy with warm crusty bread
